:Something we've started doing is buying chicken/turkey backs from store and making a large pot (use my hot water canner to make it in!) of broth. I throw unpeeled onions, carrots, celery.. whatever flavors I like in, cook it - strain it - and can it! Love to have it in the cupboard. At the local butcher here oxtail is about 1.29lb, my husband thought it was a bit much for oxtail- but for less than two dollars I can get a whole oxtail.. and it makes wonderful soup/broth plus it's cheaper than buying soup bones!! Lamb shank here is 1.99lb and is wonderful browned and then roasted! There are cheaper cuts of meats we have been experimenting with. As far as cell phones,... I am cheap I guess. It bothers me to pay good money for something only to rent it for the rest of it's life! I agree to use the pay as you go idea, also we live in a small town and can get away with a real nice walkie talkie system that has a 5-mile radius, it looks like a cell phone in size but we do not have near the bills!! We are still looking for ways to conserve.
