I have been wanting to have some sort of herbal garden for years. I tried one a couple years ago, but it failed. I think I had it in a too shaded area.
Anyway, I was wondering.. I would like to try again, this time in a sunnier spot, but was wondering if I should be starting the plants indoors this winter? Also, where is a good place to get the seeds?
I would like to grow aloe.. obviously, an aloe plant will take care of that. I would also like to grow some comfry, and several other medicinal type herbs, as well as some cooking herbs if I make the room.
I would appreciate any thoughts and advice! TIA!

Each plant is different, even for herbs. Mint loves a cool, wet spot and oregano thrives in the sunshine. You might want to try growing your herbs in movable pots so you can determine what area they like best. For a bit of encouragement, buy strong healthy plants at first and see if you like using them. If they don't seem to thrive, doctor them if you can and move them around to find the optimal spot. Some types will take up more space than others. Cooking herbs are fairly small whereas medicinal herbs may take up more room. You can find seeds in most mail order catalogs or even at Walmart but probably not now. I have some from last year still. Certainly start with the type of herbs you know you will use. Oregano, chives and basil are my favorites because I use them all the time in cooking. Some people like the mint for teas. Or maybe you are a more adventurous cook than me and would use more rosemary, dill and thyme. (I have grown dill for pickling cukes.) I would stick with what you know you would use and when you're comfortable with that, move to other options. Best of luck!
