I love aprons and I make them quite often. I usually make my Mother-IN-law a apron every year. My Mom dosen't wear an apron. Her Mom always wore one ; every day. My other grandmother too. While I don't wear one every day. I still love them. I love the bib types and the pinafore ( Amish,/ little house ones.) I collect apron patterns too. Especially the older ones.' I have a small collection that is getting bigger. I am glad to see pattern companies bringing the older apron patterns back. pinkroses

I do wear an apron to cook . My daughter who is 13 has pretty much just picked up on the idea and when she helps in the kitchen with dinner she does as well. I have not as of yet sewn one-I believe I will try to do so sometime this summer.
Is one pattern better than another for sewing my first apron If anyone has any ideas let me know. God Bless

My DS made me an apron last year for his 4-H project. I didn't want to use it because I wanted to save it for years to come. But with his persistancy, I started using it. Now I can't seem to get out of it. Last week I used his pattern and cut it twice and made a reversible one, with one side being flannel to help oil splatters that can seep through the thin decorative material. Now my DD's can't wait for their own reversible aprons. I buy remanents of material at Wal-mart for their 4-H projects, but since they are doing other projects....I can use that for my DD's aprons. Thanks for all the great ideas! MaryAlice

You all know something funny. I can wear a apron and still have a big mess. I am short and it just seems like I can never be neat when I am cooking.; especially baking One of my deceased Grandmothers said, " it isn't good uless you get it on you ." My baked things must be pretty good. Ha. pinkrsoses

Pinkroses, I love your sense of humor....I can relate...I'm tall (5'8") so I guess my stuff just slide further down the apron! I love aprons & wear them everyday to cook...have been know to wear them outside to go neighboring just because I forgot to take it off....! Why do all the old patterns show women with microscopic waists....didn't they have any "fluffy" ladies back then? ? I bought a cheap pattern to teach my DD 12 yrs old.....It's called patterns for dummies....was only 99 cents so can't gripe if the price is right!!!!! I used to use terrycloth kitchen towels and sew the bias tape on the long side. Need to use a bath towel now...heehee! You can also put one length wise to make a bib & sew bias tape for the neck part.....good luck....

Jalyn, I know that some women worked all the time on the farm and etc. Most worked so much they didn't have the extra time for sweet things and to indulged like we do today I think that I may indulge to much as I am quite plump.. teehee pinkroses

I like to wear aprons depending on the clothes I'm wearing and what I'm making. I don't like frying bacon and tomato sauce likes me too much! But, imagine, if you will, a woman eight months pregnant wearing a waist apron! I look like such a dork and I don't care how cute the apron is!

here is a link I found with a great idea to use a dress pattern for an apron. And there is a free headcovering/kap pattern there along with phots directions to make them. I found her info in a picture gallery very helpful for zippers too home.mindspring.com/~angeliakay/id2.html
