Hello. I hope everyone is well and keeping warm.
Does anyone want to talk about food that might be sentimental around Christmas time, be it homemade or store bought?
While I enjoy all the traditional trimmings I must say that Christmas time evokes such a desire for homemade date nut balls and divinity. They were a great treat and now even after all the years and moving to another part of the country I still associate them with Christmas and bitter cold bright winter days. The kind of days that the sun is blinding bright but the second you step outside bundled up like an Eskimo any exposed skin stings and your nose sticks together in the dry cold air.
I am sure my mother and I used just the regular divinity recipe. We added red and green candied cherries and the pieces were so pretty. The date nut balls also looked so nice all covered in coconut.
To me, their savory counterpart is sage stuffing. Christmas stuffing is still the only time I ever eat sage and I love it.
It isn't just how good these things are to eat but the feelings they evoke. To me it is the winter days, carols playing on the radio, the tree in the living room, going out to tend the animals and my parents starting the cars up to keep them from freezing. All this comes back at the sight of a date ball now.
I am curious to know what other people associate with their sentimental foods.

Hi, I'm checking in here on the day after Thanksgiving. I hope everyone had a nice day yesterday. My Thanksgiving was a quiet low key one. I had a plate of food and too much delicious apple pie and spent the rest of the day reading inspirational blogs and watching the weather change from warm and sunny to pretty crisp. It almost reached freezing last night.
My Christmas plans are to make some cookies. I was given a cookie press two years ago and have never used it. It is in great shape and perhaps has never been used at all. It has several plates of different shaped holes. I've never used a cookie press before. You should see the little cookbooklet that came with it, we're talking about the 1950's. But the ingredients are the same as I have now. I see I can even make cheese sticks with it. So that will be an adventure.
As for me, it will be a mincemeat pie made with Nonsuch Mincemeat you buy in the jar. It's my favorite holiday pie. I just make one because nobody I know likes it. Actually most people I know have never tried it but are put off by the name.
Well, I guess that's me in a nutshell at this time. Thankfully my pets are alright. I am praying that the new year will include some prosperity for us and bring about a better feeling of security and stability for everyone. I pray the news is more positive and all the military people can come home safely. Thank you very much for this wonderful website. Kathleen.

I hope everyone is ok.
Simple Woman's Day Book.
Outside my window.......Everything gray and drippy. It's been pouring all morning. 60 degrees.
I am thinking.......Of bringing in the porch plants.
I am thankful for.......My ability to get around and do things for myself.
From the kitchen.......Baking an acorn squash.
I am learning.......To really reduce my intake of sugar and salt.
I am wearing.......An aqua sweat shirt, gray sweat pants, tiny diamond-like earrings.
I am creating.......A filing system to cut down on paper clutter.
I am going.......To stay home today since my work hours have been cut a lot.
I am reading.......Pioneer Woman website.
I am hoping.......To be assigned more work hours so I don't have to deal with the Dept. of Labor.
I am hearing.......Rush Limbaugh on the radio, birds, traffic, the computer tower humming.
Around the house.......Wet umbrella drying in the living room. Jack won't eat his new fancy organic cat food so it's back to Kit'n Kaboodle.
One of my favorite things.......Chocolate ice cream.

I hope everyone has a nice Labor Day.
Here are some cute takes on the day :
Funny Labor Day Quotes
If all the cars in the United States were placed end to end, it would probably be Labor Day Weekend. Doug Larson
Labor Day is a glorious holiday because your child will be going back to school the next day. It would have been called Independence Day, but that name was already taken. Bill Dodds
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow. Douglas Pagels, "These Are the Gifts I'd Like to Give to You"
The only liberty an inferior man really cherishes is the liberty to quit work, stretch out in the sun, and scratch himself. H.L. Mencken
The man who doesn't relax and hoot a few hoots voluntarily, now and then, is in great danger of hooting hoots and standing on his head for the edification of the pathologist and trained nurse, a little later on. Elbert Hubbard
Man is so made that he can only find relaxation from one kind of labor by taking up another. Anatole France, "The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard"

Good afternoon. My check in headline is Hot, Humid, Steamy, Sticky weather. But it's all good.
I don't have a real garden but I have some plants on the balcony. I have this large geranium that had beautiful red flowers on it but they left and it has not bloomed again. When I can I will buy it some fertilizer. Maybe that will help.
My boss called and I have been given the opportunity to get some extra work hours due to one of my coworkers retiring. This is a wonderful blessing and I'm claiming it. Praise God for this respite. The thing is though, is that all the clients are converting to computerized information. This means my job is becoming obsolete. But I will stick in as long as I can. But I must be preparing. I don't know what to do since I cannot afford a class in anything and I don't have any experience in anything fresh and relevant.
Thursday I only worked three hours and I was dragging myself home in the heat and humidity. Soon after I got off the bus a neighbor lady "kidnapped" me and took me in her car to a couple interesting spots.
First was a nearby thrift shop where I found a nice pair of $9 shoes that are black closed toed sandals, therefore ok for work. They are much cooler than my regular heavy clodhoppers.
The second stop was one of the huge markets in the city. This one really is big, like Super Walmart sized big. But it is 100% Asian goods. And I mean serious, hardcore Asian food and housewares. I did not spend any money but I followed my friend around and can you believe the only familiar American thing I saw was beer. Everything else not only was foreign but no subtitles.
I've never seen such a sea of different frozen meatballs. Everything just went on and on forever! They had a large fish dept. and big tanks with sea monsters swimming around. The several bakeries had exotic pasteries made with exotic fruits but one thing struck me as looking so good. An almond roll cake. Whoa! I would love to have got that and had you all over for iced tea and almond cake today.
They also had a prepared meat area that really did feature smoked ducks hanging by their long necks with their heads attched as well as a smoked pig. Just like you see on tv. My friend kept calling it Chinese food but far as I could tell it was mostly the Thai, Vietnamese, and Loatian languages used there.
So,
Job somewhat better - check.
Pets ok - check.
Friends ok - check. I see that a dear neighbor lady who suffers from rhumatoid arthritius so much so that she is confined to a chair is back home much more. I visited her and she looked very nice. The electric chair enables her to get outside to fetch her mail, etc. She is more independent now.
House ok - check. Someone sent me a new shower massage to replace my worn out broken off one but I will have to wait for a tall person to reach up there to install it.
Bible reading - check. I know there are many good inspirational books out there but I am too hot and sticky now to start anything.
Everyone have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

(I've always wanted to do one of these. My computer won't let me transfer the actual format so I just typed it.)
A Simple Woman's Daybook
For Today .......... I am determined to declutter many areas and get exercise by taking items to the dumpster and back.
Outside my window.......... The back view is so green with a tall forest of bamboo, a huge pecan tree, and sky high pine tree.
I am thinking about .......... An old, old cemetary I used to visit with my parents in Hanover, Illinois.
From the learning room .......... I am working on a foreign language since that seems to be desirable by employers.
I am thankful for .......... The ability to seemingly walk a little bit better lately.
I love .......... Listening to the mourning doves and mocking birds.
From the kitchen .......... A fresh pot of brewed coffee and soft sweet ripe bananas.
I am wearing .......... A pink with white polka dots sleeveless house dress. When I go outside I'll wear slip-on tennis shoes. Or whatever you call tennis shoes nowadays.
I am reading .......... Matthew. I read my Bible during the day. I am afraid that if I try to get up early or do it at bedtime I want to fall asleep.
I am hoping .......... To get a part time job or a better regular job very soon.
I am creating .......... An exercise routine for myself.
I am praying .......... For my neighbors and friends who are suffering physically and emotionally.
Around the house .......... All is calm. Nice fresh air coming in the windows.
One of my favorite things .......... A bar of pink Dove soap.
A few plans for the rest of the week. .......... Apply for a job at a children's hospital and a pizza place, organize my so-called important papers, buy postage stamps and cat litter.

Dear Friends,
I have been signed up for a while but this is my first message.
Thank you all very much for this nice web place. It is very beautiful and has much good writing, too.
My screen name here is Kathleen but my real name is Dorothy. Just that when I signed up it said the name Dorothy was already taken. Kathleen is my middle name.
I am a Christian and I know Jesus Christ died for my sins and I strive to serve him with my life. Reading the good book always teaches me and consoles me and renews me just when I need it the most.
I bet I'm the only single person here and have no children. I live in a big city in an apartment with a couple pets. I work but like so many people nowadays my hours have been reduced to impossible so I'm looking for a part time or other job. That has been occupying my mind for the past while. I hope to resolve it soon. This is amazing as I am at a time in life when I ought to be looking at retirement soon, but I do not see that now. I pray for the strength for this and the knowledge to make the best decisions. I also pray for all of us hit by the economic woes.
I am from the country. I was born and raised in a little town in the Midwest on the banks of the Mississippi River. I miss our fresh eggs, meat, morels, rhubarb, asparagus and smoked carp. You can tell I like to eat I guess!
Now I am in a large metropolitian center alone packed in with people. I'm here but I'm really not part of it all. I appreciate many things the city has to offer though such as public transit. I do not drive so I need a way to get around.
Well, that's me.
Sincerely,
Dorothy
