Was wondering if any of you ladies had any easy little boy pattern ideas... I have a three year old boy who is tall and skinny- he is more into fours and fives need to be rolled a bit. Also, am going to try and attempt making shirts for DH. I am really daunted but really want to try...any advice? Thanks Joanna

Most of the three major pattern companies make everything too bulky for skinny little ones so, you might want to go a size smaller and and length. A lot of children tend to grow in height and not in width during growth spurts. I, personally, always liked the Kwik Sew patterns (Sewing for Toddlers/Children) because they seem to have more accurate sizing for my children although I always have to adjust the crotch depth as mine are short waisted. These patterns are easy to sew up if you like to sew with knits and have a serger. To find nice little boy patterns is really rather difficult these days. At his age, it is easy just to make pull on pants and tee shirts. Makes pottying easy. Now for Sunday best, you may have to search out the other pattern companies.
And as for shirts for DH, let him tell you what type of shirt he wants. He may have to sacrifice an old favorite for you to rip apart and use as a pattern. My mom has always made my dad's shirts and has never bought a pattern. My husband gets his own at garage sales and thrift stores as he realizes its cheaper and quicker that way. I don't remember the last time we bought him a new shirt. Maybe a church shirt for Christmas one year. He's not real picky.
At any rate, start simple and see how it goes. Good luck!

I used to make all my son's clothes and DH levis & shirts....My son was also tall & skinny...so I just added length..once you make one pair it's easier...the fly is easy as it's all in the way you hold it...I always had a good pair close to look at when putting it together...! My daughter's things were easier as a ruffle here & there could fix about anything...! I always liked Butterick or Simplicity but also use McCalls...think it's just what your comfy with....good luck...!

Were you able to find a pattern for your so yet?
The girls and I do the sewing for the family here. The boys wear Amish style pants (broadfalls with suspenders) and button front shirts. I buy these when I can and simply remove the collar, leaving a band style collar. I have a pattern to sew them as well, but it's always nice to buy them when I can. My husband has similar shirts for church, but for everyday work, he wears pocket t-shirts, so we don't sew them.
The Amish patterns do tend toward 'long and lanky' in sizing. I have changed the button front on the youngers pants...adding elastic along the back waist and stitching the front closed so they don't need to contend with buttons while potty training.
The girls and I wear cape style dresses, or simple button bodice dresses and aprons. Nothing fancy in our dressing really.

I wish I could sew as many things as you do!!!WOW!! I am excited b/c tomorrow I am going to my neighbors to learn how to sew a simple skirt for my daughter, and if I'm lucky a jumper style dress! I hope I get it right b/c they are moving across the country in two weeks, and this is my only chance! Its amazing that you all can sew such things though!
