We have had a couple months off from home schooling and I am thinking about starting again on Monday.
The kids had a wonderful week at Church Summer Camp this week - to the point that they are completely exhausted, and I'm thinking that is a great way to end the break.
Is there anyone else getting ready to start the next school year?

We are going to start our school year on august 4th. That still gives us two weeks of "vacation". This week starts Vacation Bible School and we have been doing a family bible study lesson every night. But we will soon be starting the Abeka curriculum. I am excited and nervous at the same time. This is my first year homeschooling all three of my kids........its going to be a great adventure!!

I will be using as much of the curriculum from the Old Fashioned Education website as possible. I also use the library as much as possible. I am learning that you can turn any book into a text book it just takes time. I will be home schooling 2 out of my 3 children this year. This will be a first for me as well only my 2nd year home schooling.

We are set to start back up August 18, but that may shift if we haven't found a place to live by the 1st of August. I will need a week to unpack and a week to prep for the first week of school. *yikes!!!*

Well today was our first day of our new school year and I think it went pretty well. I kept it pretty light since we are all just coming off of a break.
I have also taken the time to set things up differently and hopefully more organized. I needed to do something since I am now schooling 2 of them and have a 3yo that has to be in the middle of everything.
They weren't too happy about the 8:00 a.m. dentist appointment this morning though.

Mountaingirl, Are you planning on any type of "school" for your three year old. My youngest is 2 1/2 and insists on doing school with the big kids! I think it will be a good way to work on listening skills, quiet time, and maybe he'll pick up on a few things as well! He was very upset we didnt order him books from Abeka this year with the other kids though, so we'll have to make a trip to the dollar tree!

My boys go to camp next week and when they get back, summer is OVER! It's back to the books and organized routine starting Aug. 4. I purposely took this summer off as we school year round and I have NEVER taken a summer off in 6 years. But, I'm ready to get back to a better routine. The kids are bored and sitting on top of each other. We are a bit more behind than I would like but not too much that it won't be easy to catch up.

Blessedmommaof3, I am doing school work with my 3 yo but only 1 or 2 projects at a time. My 3 you is still having a terrible time with colors. I am making little color books (as I call them) and we are working on one color per week; this week being red. What I have done is taken some red construction paper: folded it, cut it, and stapled it to make a half page book with several pages. I have printed coloring/craft pages from www.dltk-tech.com. My crafts are from color buddies section and then under colors-other crafts. We do on craft per day and glue it into the "red book", he is also only allowed to use a red crayon. Next week I will pick a different color and then on Friday review the 2 colors. Hopefully this will work. Every Monday morning we also do a bible study and I print up an extra coloring page for my 5 yo and 3 yo. I can't find the interenet link so I will have to look on my computer. I will respond later with the link. Sometimes I will also look on the internet for other coloring pages that work with the current bible study. We all sit down at the table together so the children also help each other out.

My thought is to let him be a kid, school will come. He knows his colors, can count some, ect.

Well we started great on Monday but the rest of the week was shot. It seems that we all have caught this head/chest cold and have not felt well this week. We are all feeling much better today so the kids are doing some art work to decorate their new binders that I put together for them.
Oh well there is always next week.

We tend to school year-round here. With 6 in 'school' currrently, and 2 youngers wanting to join in, things get slowed down a bit and we do tend to take time away from book studies more often, just to keep the days interesting for the youngers in the group. All in all, I'd say we average a little over 3 weeks of schooling each month, with a week of hands-on projects and such. As grade levels are completed, we simply move on. I have a 12 yo working in 2 grade levels right now between subjects. Our school day looks like this: Bible -- stories and discussion of devotions Wisdom & The Millers reading Math -- I work mainly with the youngers. 2 yo and 3 yo are using the ABC series of workbooks, as do the 5 yo and 6 yo. They can do it already, but they like to color and cut-n-paste When naptime comes, I work with the 5 yo and 6yo, along with our 8 yo, on their math books. English -- the olders (12 & 15) have their Pathway Readers and workbooks, and Working with Words books, plus regular grammar work. The middles (10 & 8) have Pathway Readers, Bible Nurture and Reading series, and spelling books. The youngers (6 & 5...with tag-alongs 3 & 2 most days) have Word Mastery and Learning To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. Science -- we do various things. We like to 'research' things from our Handbook of Nature Study, and just read alot about different animals, trees, weather, whatever. History -- we are reading John Smith currrently (we bought the Heroes of History series from YWAM Publishing). We also like to read the Little House of The Prairie set and use our Prairie Primer. Handwriting and Copywork is pen pal letters, and copying our verses for memory work for church class. We are planning to build a log cabin this year....the children have been collecting branches all year for this. They are trimming them down and 'drying' them under the workshop overhang. LOL....our 10 yo wants to build Boonesboro (we have the Daniel Boone movies....). I'm working on a way to tie in a lot of history and science with this, studying how houses were built back then vs now, forestry lessons, etc. Best laid plans....we'll see what happens Deanna

We are the parents of 7 children and have chosen to homeschool several of the children for different reasons. We are going to start homeschooling our 13 year old son this year. He just seems to have hit a brick wall in public school. Does anyone have any advise on starting at this level? The other children were much younger when we started.
