Since I am not an advanced seamstress, I'd like to share an idea for girl's dresses with those of you who may also be at or near my sewing skill level. I recently made dresses from a blouse and tee-shirt for my daughter by adding fabric to the waistline of the blouse and tee-shirt. This was such a simple and SUPER quick project, I just have to share it! 1. select matching fabric for blouse or tee-shirt 2. measure and cut fabric to desired length - (my daughter wears a girl's size 8 & I used 1 1/2 yd. fabric for each dress) 3. sew the fabric into a tube 4. using a running basting stitch gather the tube at the waistline - make sure it measures the same width as the blouse or tee-shirt waist 5. cut the bottom of the blouse or tee-shirt off about 1 1/2 inches BELOW waistline (I used pinking shears so I wouldn't have to worry about fraying) 6. with right sides together, pin and sew the gathered tube to the bottom of the blouse or tee-shirt 7. hem the skirt to desired length I've posted photos of the end result on my blog: herpeculiarlife.blogspot.com/2009/02/growing-growing-gone.htmltb

Those are quite pretty; I especially like the lavender dress with the flower on top.

Great projects! The denim skirt is wonderful too. I really want to learn how to sew more than just a crooked line. *grin* I have some bare basics that have gotten me this far but I would love to do more. Maybe one day.

Oh what nice dresses. They look quick and easy to make.
One thing I do to get cheap fabric is to pick up sheets at garage sales. I love gingham fabric and have been able to find some nice sheets that are usable to make dresses out of.

Sheets ... What a FABULOUS idea. I've bought plus sized dresses at re-sales shops for fabric, but had not thought of sheets. Thanks for the tip.

Our goodwill sells them as sets and the sheets are great. If you get large enough ones you normally have enough material to make a doll dress also. Glad to provide a new idea.

Wonderful post! Great Pictures - have to get my girlfriend from church to see your blog- very much a concern. I have a little boy - but she has two girls and they are very careful. I am going to have to try the dress thing. I have an easier time finding tops I like -but a dress or skirt to go is almost impossible - or maybe just rare! Will have to try - thank you. Joanna

Thank you for posting the step by step pictures. I think I just might try this now that I can see how you did it!

I'm so glad to hear someone else is into recycling...I do most of our clothing shopping at Goodwill...we have a really nice large store..amazing to see who shops there...heehee! I'll take sleeves out & reuse them...T-shirts are taken & added to either w/ready made "short" skirts or I'll use fabric I have....trim the T-shirt top w/colorful buttons or bows or "thingys" from the fabric used in the skirt...(if the fabric has a pattern in it) I also buy denim skirts or whatever for the fabric...I use old jean pockets in crafts & to put on fabric vests for the girls...there's a never ending tub here for "recycle"...I found a garage sale bargain on a fabric top for dd1 but she didn't like the lace sleeves so I removed them & will use them for dd2 in a T-shirt top....love the challange ....both the girls prefer skirts & dresses over pants...Oh TB, for skirts if you find a long tiered skirt you can use the different tiers for kids skirts or bottoms for dresses...dd2 id very "fluffy" so I'll buy a ladies tiered skirt & take the bottom off to make it the right length then use the other tier & add to a pair of jean skirt I need the length on. You can take a pair of jeans that fit & just below the zipper (about 3") then add the skirt tier....I also buy the short jean skirts at Goodwill & add the long ruffles on them ...one of a kind & they love them..usually end up costing about $5 per skirt...can't beat that! Loved the pix on your blog!
