Hello. I hope everyone is well and keeping warm.
Does anyone want to talk about food that might be sentimental around Christmas time, be it homemade or store bought?
While I enjoy all the traditional trimmings I must say that Christmas time evokes such a desire for homemade date nut balls and divinity. They were a great treat and now even after all the years and moving to another part of the country I still associate them with Christmas and bitter cold bright winter days. The kind of days that the sun is blinding bright but the second you step outside bundled up like an Eskimo any exposed skin stings and your nose sticks together in the dry cold air.
I am sure my mother and I used just the regular divinity recipe. We added red and green candied cherries and the pieces were so pretty. The date nut balls also looked so nice all covered in coconut.
To me, their savory counterpart is sage stuffing. Christmas stuffing is still the only time I ever eat sage and I love it.
It isn't just how good these things are to eat but the feelings they evoke. To me it is the winter days, carols playing on the radio, the tree in the living room, going out to tend the animals and my parents starting the cars up to keep them from freezing. All this comes back at the sight of a date ball now.
I am curious to know what other people associate with their sentimental foods.

What a fun topic! For me...one of my favorite food memories would have to be Sandies. Some call them Mexican wedding cakes or Russian tea cakes but we gre up knowing them as Sandies. I just love to make them and eat them of course. *grin* This is one cookie that always reminds me of my Mother. Even today she still looks forward to having them each Christmas. Only now, instead of Mom baking them, the roles are reversed and I'm the one making them for her.
