When invited to someone's home do you generally present a hostess gift?
If so, what sorts of gifts do you give?
Although I grew up very poor, my grandmother consistently said, "A lack of money is no excuse for uncleanliness or poor manners." So, my personal answer to the above questions are:
YES, I usually take along a hostess gift. I like to present things that are fairly generic. Some examples are: homemade cocoa mix, quilted or crocheted pot holders, stationary, sparkling cider, a small bouquet of flowers, a set of coasters, an embroidered dish towel, etc.
How about you?

Hostess gifts aren't done very much here,(it would be considered very formal) but it's polite to offer to bring something for the meal, usually dessert.
I love to give (and receive) flowers, too, because as the giver you don't have to wonder if they need more, and as the recipient you can throw them away without hurting anyone's feelings, lol.
