I just finished reading another great first hand account of World War II Germany entitled, "On Hitler's Mountain Overcoming The Legacy of a Nazi Childhood" by Irmgard A. Hunt
This autobiography will most certainly be added to our World War II and Holocaust required literature - "The Diary of Anne Frank", "The Torn Thread" & "Corrie Ten Boom".
A quote from Irmgard Hunt's preface, "I made up my mind always to be on the lookout for the signs - however insidious and seemingly harmless - of dictatorships in the making and to resist politics that are exclusive, intolerant, or based on ideological zealotry and that demand unquestioned faith in one leader and a flag. I hope that young people everywhere learn to recognize the danger signs and join me in the mission to prevent a recurrence of one of history's most tragic chapters."
NOTE: At the back of the book is "A Conversation with Irmgard Hunt". After reading this "conversation" I have surmised that Ms. Hunt is far more socially and politically liberal minded than I or our family. HOWEVER, if you are very conservative, like me and my family, please do not let her personal and political ideology prevent you from experiencing her personal account of World War II Germany. I think it is a valuable perspective when studying this era of world history.
