So, I planted spinach this spring and it did so-so. We had a heat wave recently and it bolted and went to seed which is what I wanted. I'm wondering now if I harvested the seed to early. Does anyone know how to tell when its good for seed? Some parts of the plant were mostly brown and the seeds were still green. I'm letting the dry out more on the back porch on a sheet. And, too, can I turn around and plant that seed this fall?

I'm drying my spinach seed on paper towels in the laundry room (we've had few unexpected rain showers). My tops are also green, but the little black seeds are beginning to fall out. I will pour these into an envelope once I'm sure they are very dried out and plant them next spring. As long as the seed dries out well, I would expect you could plant it this fall. tb

When it was all said and done, my seed looked just like that which I bought. And, I nearly filled a quart jar! There's a lot of seed. Will try planting some in a few weeks when it cools down a bit.
