Are you talking about what you put into the dishwasher or just to wash dishes with. I just tryed a new recipe for dishwasher soap: 1 tablesthingy borax to 1 tablesthingy of baking soda It works pretty good - not sure about regular dish soap though.
By the way, do you make your own laundry soap?? I have a recipe that calls for Fels Naptha, Borax, and Washing Soda I have only been able to find the Fels Naptha at one place around here and I can not find the washing soda at all. I am not sure if you can use baking soda instead or not. Anyway haven't been able to try the recipe to see if I like it or not.

Homemade Dish Soap (for hand washing dishes)
liquid castile soap 20 drops lime essential oil 10 drops sweet orange essential oil 5 drops citrus seed extract
Fill a clean 22 oz. plastic squirt bottle with castile soap (diluted according to directions if using concentrate). Add the essential oils. Shake bottle before each use. Use only 1-2 tbsp. per sink of dishes.
For other nice smelling blends, try the following combination of essential oils:
10 drops lavender essential oil, 8 drops rosemary essential oil, 4 drops eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil, 6 drops bergamont essential oil, 4 drops lavender essential oil, 2 drops orange essential oil
15 drops lemon or lemongrass essential oil 6 drops lavender essential oil 5 drops bergamont essential oil
Recipes are from The Naturally Clean Home by Karyn Siegel-Maier. - Excellent resource.
Don't have any suggestions for automatic dishwasher soap.
Regarding homemade laundry soap. If one can't find Fels-Naptha, grated Ivory soap works just as well. Also, one can substitute 1/2 the amount of baking soda for washing soda. However, after requesting that my local market to carry washing soda, they began stocking it within two weeks.
I hope this helps you all on your quest for inexpensive, healthy and environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Castile soap can often be found in the cleaning products isle of many grocers, Dr. Bronner's is a popular. Again, if your local market doesn't currently stock it, request the product. Some health food stores also carry it.

I have used just about any bar soap for laundry soap. Even my extensive collection of little hotel soaps from when my husband used to travel for work. I just weigh them. I think a bar of Fels Naptha is 6 ounces. Washing soda is NOT the same as baking soda, as I have tried both

If you can't find Fels Napha bar soap you can use Zote bar soap...usually found in the Latino section of grocery stores...I've used both & prefer the smell of the Fels Napha better...you can go to Zote soap .com for other info....

I've used any soap I have on hand to make the laundry detergent and they wall work fine. Soap does nothing more than reduce the surface tension of the water, it's the washing soda and borax that actually do the cleaning. However, the soap does work as a degreaser. I've used ivory soap, basic soap, kirk's castille bar soap, fels naptha, and octagon and all work just fine. Hope this helps
