UGGGGHHHH!!! A few months ago...well maybe a little longer but I know it was less than a year ago I had to buy a new can opener as our old hand crank style just wasn't getting the job done anymore. So after looking online and doing some research on user reviews I ended up getting the Kitchenaide brand hand crank style. In the beginning it worked wonderfully but tonight I went to open a can and the hand turn part of it just turned and turned, but it would not budge in turning around the can and actually opening it. So frustrating. In a year I have had to buy 2 can openers and now I am needing yet another. This is so aggravating!!! So now I am thinking I am going to look for an electric can opener since the others seem to be letting me down. Any ideas or suggestions or a GOOD can opener...electric or manual? I will certainly appreciate any tips you can give me.

Hi Keeperofthehome,
I've never owned an electric can opener. But I have owned my current manual can opener for over a decade. It is all stainless steel with rubber grips over the handles and has some weight to it. Under the blades it is embossed with Swing-A-Way (I don't know if that is the brand name or not). I have been very pleased with it. I hope this helps...tb

I have this same problem. It seems about every six months or so I am buying another can opener! Very frustrating!!!

I bought mine for my "hope chest" way before I was even married. It's more than 20 years old and I've never bought another one. It is a Swing-Away as well (manual) and I love it! For some quirky reason, I remember when I bought it that it had the "Good Housekeeping" stamp of approval on it.

I ended up getting the Hamilton Beach Open Station can opener. It is pretty neat. It has some extra features that are kind of neat. Here's a synopsis of what the web description says on it:
# PRODUCT FEATURES 3 tools in one all store together # Jar opener has secure, nonslip grip and stores on top of the unit # Can opener has SureCut™ technology and opens cans of all sizes # Removable cutting unit is washable # OpenMate™ multi-tool opens plastic packages, pop-top cans and removes bottle caps as well as twist-off caps
So we'll see how it works later today when I try it out.

Ladies, I have an uncle that always buys the same wedding gift for everyone - a good, no-nonsense, rubber handled can opener!! That's it, nothing else! His wife usually apologizes and tries not to offend by buying some other gift to make up - but he really means it. He believes that a little extra put in to a hand held saves frustration for years... I still have mine almost eighteen years later! Joanna

We stopped using electronic can openers about 2 years ago - we have been married for almost 8 years this July, and we had already gone through 3, count them THREE brand-new electric can openers in 6 years. We found an OLD hand-crank can opener at the thrift store and it hasn't failed us yet. My Grampa actually recommended buying an old one, because he swears they were made better than they are today.
Edited: UHM... 7 year anniversary (sorry, somedays it feels like we met yesterday and others it feels like we've been together for decades. LOL)

I bought the one I described and it worked well until...well, about January. Then it went out on me. So ee ended up going with the hand held opener.
