Dear Ladies, I am so excited. Someone sent us a gift of money to use for the children's clothes. I have struggled to keep them presentable. We went shopping yesterday and I was able to get the boys each a church out fit and some underclothing that they needed. I was appalled at what they were selling for the little girls so we went to the material. Because we bought material for the girls I was able to get enough material for a new church dress and a new going out dress. I also got the notions for some other clothing items that I have not sewn yet because I did not have the notions. ;D They will each have matching jumpers, some one gave me the cutest corduroy , Hopefully this time I remember to cut all the pieces going the right direction They will also each get two pettiblouses and a pair of bloomers. Now all I need to do is make the time. Just wanted to share how God is providing for this family

Michelle,
I am so happy for you that God provided for this need. You mentioned buying underclothes. We had to recently go out and buy these items for all 5 of us and I about passed out at the total. It is crazy what they charge for such small items that no one will ever see. I have not learned to sew yet, but I just got a machine that was given to me back from the repair shop and it looks like it is going to be a really nice one. Bri is learning to sew. She made 3 pair of flannel jammie pants for her and Liberty this past week. My mom is teaching her. My mom gave her a machine and I am looking forward to the day when we will each be at our machines sewing together.
You mentioned getting notions. I was wandering if you have a JoAnn Fabrics near you? If you do you should sign up for their mailing list and their e-mail list. You can also get a teacher's discount card since you homeschool. I don't order off their on-line sales, but sometimes they send me extra coupons to use in store through an e-mail and then I can get more that way. I also know that sometimes they have 50% off their notions from time to time. I also know that no matter how good the sale is or how many coupons you have, if you don't have the money you don't have the money.
Keep an eye out at Wal-Mart as they are starting to mark their clothes down and I noticed that their little suits type clothes were being clearanced.
Blessings, Heather

Thank you so much for the advice. The closest Joanns is 40 miles away. I could go to one in Indidana but the car seat laws make it difficult for us to go. All five children would need a car seat. I did go to walmart and I bought each of the boys a outfit for church. They have pants, shirts and a vest. The boys look very handsome in them. I told DH I need to save up and get pictures taken. We have not had them done in 2 years. Isaiah was a baby when it was taken. I also wanted to know how you ladies organize you notions. I seem to have them all over and it is always hard to find what I am looking for. I will also have to look into getting a discount card. That would be very helpful. Thanks for all of the info.

I appalled you for sewing clothes for your little girls. My mom made a few for me when I was little too. I agree the clothes for little girls today. The dresses! Way to short and reveling, even for little girls. Pinkrosessks

I love to sew, and Si'Ara loves my sewing too.
I am thankful that not only is my daughter modest, my son is as well! How much of a blessing is it to have children that think about modesty~!

LOL....a day late (ok, a bit more than a mere day late...)
How did that sewing turn out for you? Never-ending, isn't it? I am curious as to the pettiblouse pattern you use? I have one here from Kathy's Modest Clothing (I think that's the name....) but have not stitched it yet. (a big problem I have...I seem to collect patterns and sometimes not use them
Notions....I am blessed with a wonderful sewing area, despite the small size of a double-wide mobile home and 9 children! The original "dining room" here was laughable for our use as such (my dining table is 9 ft...the room is barely that!) so it's used for the sewing room, as well as having the main desk and computer. I have a large brass and pewter antique baker's rack in there to hold my fabrics and items. On the shelves below I keep those plastic shoebox tubs...one for zippers, one for elastic, one for bias tapes, rick-rack, ribbon trims, etc. I have an old, large sewing basket (just a WalMart one, nothing fancy) that I keep all my thread spools in. I am re-thinking how to store them as it's difficult to find the color I am wanting in the "pile" of spools in the sewing basket. Might go with another plastic tub... On the bottom shelves, I have 3 of the RubberMaid style filing tubs (the kind you 'hang' the file folders in) and these house my patterns and master drafts. I don't cut my patterns -- as soon as I do it never fails I need a different size. I was ironing them onto interfacing for a while to make them more sturdy, but what I've found works better for me is to buy a roll of banner paper from Staples or OfficeMax and trace off the size I need. Eventually I end up with all the sizes of a given pattern traced off and it's a quick thing to grab the size needed and get fabric prepared for sewing. Just this past month, I've started using the butcher paper we use for wrapping meat (we buy in case bulk...with that and hunting, we needed a good system for freezing meats). We bought a HUGE roll of butcher paper at Sam's Club and it works great for my pattern drafts. Not as thick as the banner paper, but it works great anyway.

Wow you are very organized with your patterns. I do not have an official pattern for my petiblouse. Years ago I had a dress made form Lillies. I sent them material and I cut it out and sewed it. But I traced off the dress pattern before I put it together. I use the bodice of that and sew a simple skirt to the bottom. I am not currently working on that as I am busy making mama pads for me. They become much more urgent the begining of this week. I want to finish up the blouse and jumper for Sunday. I hope.

Michelle, There is a Joanns Store It is on Us 23 South. By Big Lots It is easy to get on their mailing list. They have a form in the store. Once you are on the list all it takes is to have the address lable scanned and you will keep getting the flyers.

We lived in an area at one time that was far away from any fabric store. So, I went to the second hand store and bought ladies dresses that had good usuable matterial and then made dresses for my neices out of this matterial. Each dress was less than 2.00 and I had a usuable zipper and buttons for another project.

Lavenderlady's suggestion regarding used clothes from the second-hand store reminds me of my dear grandmother. When I lived with her as a young girl, folks would occasionally give her bags of women's dresses and sometimes men's pants she was a widow. Unfortunately, many times the clothing was not presentable for public wear large stains, rips, etc. But, my grandmother being a very thrifty woman never let those clothes go to waste. She always ripped out the seems and used the unstained fabric, zippers, buttons, lace, hooks & eyes, etc. to make clothing for me. Because of her thriftiness and abundance of love, I was always well dressed and never felt deprived, even though we survived well below the poverty line. Thank you, Lavenderlady, for bringing back the wonderful memories of love I shared with my grandmother ... tb

That is a great idea about the butcher block paper and tracing the pattern. How do you get the original pattern on the butcher block paper? Do you use one of those pokey wheel tracers or do you use tracing paper between the pattern and butcher paper?

Also what is a pettiblouse? I have never heard of this before? Is it an undershirt for girls?

A pettiblouse is a blouse with a slip, (petticoat) attached. Wonderful for under jumpers.

what a neat idea! I will have to look into getting/making a pettiblouse for my daughter. she really needs something under the jumpers I make for her. plus it would eliminate making so many undershirts and slips, just make one item instead of numerous items thanks for the information.
