I found this recipe for powdered soap. I will try it and see how it goes.
1 Cup Grated Soap * 1/2 Cup Washing Soda (NOT baking soda) 1/2 Cup Borax
Mix together and use 1 Tablesthingy per load, 2 Tablesthingys if it is a really soilded load.
*I chop mine up into chunks w/ a knife and throw it in the food processor. Then I put it in a roasting pan on the top of the entertainment center for a day or two to dry out again, then into the food processor again to make a very fine powder. Actually the powder is so fine that I put a damp kitchen towel over the food processor while blending, and let it settle for a minute or so before opening so I don't breathe in soap powder. This extra is just personal preference, and not necessary-many folks just use it grated up and mix the powder well before measuring out each load.

I looked that up also. It has a higher PH than regular soda. You can find it in the same spot as laundry detergant. It is normay by the borax and other additives. I will post some more recipes. I also have one for dishwashing detergent.

This soap works great. I have been using it and i really like it. It is not as hard to make as the liquid. I also just used the bar soap that we had on hand. It was wet, we have a very damp home, so I crumbled it as best I could and put it into the oven and let the pilot dry it out. It worked very well.

How many of you have made this detergent and like it so much that you are still making it and using it today? I would love to try it. My girls are excited that we are going to try this. But I need to know if it works good.

I went to the store and bought all 3 ingredients for the homemade laundry detergent, the liquid, and I am really praying that it works. Has anyone had any allergy issues using this?

I made some a couple of weeks ago. I made mine in a 5gallon bucket(I double the recipe) I use a 5gal paint stirrer to mix that gelled part back up. I didn't have any liquid laundry detergent containers so I'm using the tupperware cereal container I also added some orange scent to it. I also dump in a little(maybe about 1/4c.) baking soda in with the detergent as a laundry booster. I buy those big boxes of it. You can use vinegar in your downy ball. In my gallon vinegar bottle I added about 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract. It sure helps that smell lol. You could of course add any scent you wished.

Well I fixed the detergent as the recipe said, but I used boiling hot water. I had the problem one of the other ladies had, where it started to look like chicken fat. I have added about an extra 2 qts. of boiling hot water. This morning it is still fatty looking but is stirable. What is the end project suppose to look like? Please reply with answer soon. Thanks.

I have added no extra boiling water. Mine does resemble chicken fat. It works just fine for me.

I make my laundry soap, and it's supposed to have a gelled texture to it. I just try and stir it at least once a day. I also found a recipe for homemade softener if anyone is interested.

After many attempts to get the gelled look, I guess I have failed. My detergent still looks like a big clump of fat. I am going to use it though. Maybe if I shred the soap the next time it will malt faster and better. Oh well. I would love the recipe for the softner.

Here is a link to site that shows you step by step how to make the soap. It will look like gelled chicken fat when done. tinyurl.com/ywtufp
