Sister Michelle you can use scented oils to scent the soap. www.thefamilyhomestead.com also has instructions and pictures. She includes how to add/how much essential oil.

Hello all ladies, I am on my second batch of the homemade laundry detergent and my kids and my husband love it. My husband is very sensitive to some detergents and he can use this and is so glad that we get so much for our money now. Thanks for posting the recipe. It is so helpful when you find new ideas.
I have not tried the fabric softner yet. If you have, how does it work? and is it worth it?

Hello all! I am doing my weekly shopping tomorrow and thought I might give this a try, but my question is has anyone tried using Dove bar soap with this recipe? My 15 month old has very sensitive skin and we only use dove bar soap on his skin. Do you think it would work?

Sisters...........I am so impressed............I too want to make my own laundry soap. My grandma used to make soap, but I don't think it was as easy as any of these recipes. Thanks a bunch!!

I think the Dove would be fine. White soap seems to be the key thing. Actually, I have used aknock-off of Irish Spring. This does make it a detergent and not a soap. Some people want to avoid the detergents and so would want to avoid anything that has them in it. Now I just use Ivory or Pure and Gentle. I have used white vinegar with 10-16 drops of essential oils for fabric softener. I put it in a Downy ball, up to the large load line and put it on top of the clothes in the washer. I have used this in the electric dryer and the clotheslines with very good results. We do wear mostly cotton, but we have enough polyester slips, etc to create static cling. No problems.

I need to amend the above post. The soap I have been using is Pure and Natural. Sorry if someone tried to find it and couldn't.

Do you have a recipe for a dry powder detergent? I'm a new homemaker and don't have an old pot I'm willing to set aside for one purpose yet. (but I'll start watching for a used one to pick up somewhere.

I just joined the group and wanted to chime in here. I have been making the homemade laundry soap with Zote for about 3 years. It WILL look a bit like gelled chicken fat/broth. I use the same measurements mentioned in the first post. The only thing I do different is melt my soap first and then add the 2 other ingredients. I use a 3 gallon bucket to mix mine in as it fits in my kitchen sink. It fills almost to the tip-top. I will go back and stir it for about the first 2 hours here and there and then let it sit until the next day. I store it in clean kitty litter plastic jugs. They have a wide opening so if it gels a bit much you can still shake and pour it out. It won't look like regular liquid. I will testify that it does work. My daughter & I have sensative skin and it does fine for us. If I am going to hang things on the clothesline I will add some downy to the rinse cycle. If I'm using the dryer I leave the downy out. I hope this may help. ~Hope you all have a blessed day~

I also make my own laundry detergent and I add about 2 tablesthingys of Eucalyptus oil to it and it smells divine. What I do when my mix sets is to mash it with a potato masher and this keeps it nice and loose. I always dissolve the required amount in a small bucket with hot water. Remember to add vinegar to the rinse cycle, this softens clothes and also protects your washing machine from soap build up. (I put about 1/2 a cup).

WOW ! I read a post on making laundry soap and instead of mixing with water it's left dry & stored in a tight container...I made mine yesterday and use 1/8 cup per load. It's WONDERFUL and I also used the Zote soap..couldn't fine the Fels Napha and to my understanding you can use any bar laundry soap. I have to go 50 miles to get it but we plan our trips and go when we go to Sams...
