You will need:
Fabric Scraps
Rice, uncooked
Essential Oil (for fragrance)
Sewing Machine/thread/scissors/pins, etc.
Glass/Metal Bowl, metal sthingy, plastic wrap
Mug Mat
Cut fabric scraps into 2- 5 inch by 5 inch pieces. Place fabric, right sides together, and sew three sides, using a 3/8 - 1/2 inch seam allowance. Turn right side out, and press. Now, on open end of your matt, fold fabric inside, 1/2 inch and press. Top stitch around edges of your matt, 1/4 inch from edges, leaving a 2 inch opening for filling your matt.
Fill, using approx. 1/4 - 1/3 cup scented rice (directions below), and use sewing machine to complete closing the matt, by finishing top stitching along the 2 inch opening, 1/4 inch from edge.
Trivet
Cut fabric scraps into 2- 12 inch by 12 inch pieces. Place fabric, right sides together, and sew three sides, using a 3/8 - 1/2 inch seam allowance. Turn right side out, and press. Fold open end in, 1/2 inch, and press, then fold back out, leaving crease. Top stitch around edges of your trivet, 1/4 inch from edges, leaving the open end un-sewn. Now, using a chalk pencil, divide total area of trivet into four or five equal sections, and mark as if for quilting. Beginning at the edge of top stitching, sew each marked line, forming long pockets in your trivet. Be sure the lines are only sewn to 1 inch from the open end of the trivet. Fill each pocket, using enough scented rice (directions below), to firmly fill trivet 1 1/2 inches from open edges. Using pins, fold open end back inside using pressed crease as a guideline, and pin closed for finishing on sewing machine. Top stitch in place 1/4 inch from edges, and complete any needed stitching at the end of each filled pocket.
Scented Rice
Place desired amount of un-cooked rice, in a glass or metal mixing bowl.
Using essential oil (available in candle section of store), add 4 to 5 drops oil for each 1 cup of rice you are using, and stir to mix well, with a
metal sthingy. Cover bowl with plastic wrap, and set aside for 24 hours to allow fragrance to settle. Use to fill trivets or mug mats as directed above, and store any un-used scented rice in an airtight container.
Note: Placing hot mugs or dishes onto the scented trivets and mug mats will release the scent in the rice. To keep scent as fresh as possible, be sure to do any long term storage of trivets and mug mats in plastic
zipper baggies.
