Do your children's jeans and play skirts have frayed hems and worn out knees? Do you just hate tossing them out when they still fit your child or could be passed down to a younger child?
Here's an idea for a quick solution:
For the worn out knees I just go through my fabric scrap drawer and find a complimentary fabric. I then cut and sew patches. Sometimes I'll make a small patchwork type and often I'll sew a blanket stitch around the edges with embroidery floss for a decorative touch. For those frayed hems, I'll use the same same fabric as the patches and hem both sides of a long strip. I then sew the strip of fabric over the frayed hem of the pants or skirt. I've also used wide ribbon to cover frayed hems.
In 20-30 minutes my children's worn out clothing has a new and "chic" look.

My kids used to love pocket patched jeans. I used a seam ripper to remove the pockets off other totally ruined kids jeans and then sewed those pockets at the knees of patchable jeans and they really liked them too. I used fabrics to extend the hems of my daughter's jumpers for another round of use too. Thanks for posting a great idea!

For another use of worn jean pockets...you can make a niffty pencil & pad holder...kids love them...I have one on the frig. next to the calendar...! Cut the pocket off the jeans & decorate ...fabric paint, secquins, small patchwork pieces, buttons, etc. The take yarn or craft wire to make a "handle" at the top...braid the yarn, twist the wire around a pencil....etc. Attatch to the top of the pocket, add pencils, hand by a magnet on the frig. or stick pin on a bullentin board...also have taken two pockets & attatched them w/a long piece of yarn..braided...& used when I sew..keep my small scissors in one & thread & seam gauge in the other...makes it handy when you set down to do some hand work...!

I am making hubby an mp3 player holder from a couple pockets too. He has a long commute to work and a few months ago we bought him an mp3 player. I then download free audio books off the internet from my state library (ours uses Overdrive, com but some states use Netlibrary.com) I transfer them to his mp3 and he drives to work and home listening to good books. This pocket holder will be on a string he can wear around his neck while he drives. (Note: overdrive.com has a search and you can look for books by publisher like zondervan and other Christian publishers all for free)
