Ok, last year we bought a bag of cinnamon scented pine cones that you can use in the fireplace. Well we got them but never used them. They still have scent on them but instead of using them in the fireplace I wondered if I could crush a few if them up and use them inside of homemade hot pads along with the rest if the materials.
Q. Will this work or do you think it would be a bad idea?

In my humble opinion it is worth a try. What are the rest of the ingredients. Sounds like something I would like to make.

I have to look it up online but I recall seeing things in them like uncooked rice, cinnamon sticks, etc.

Sounds like a neat idea, but I'd be afraid of washing them!

I was thinking of maybe putting the scented items in a velcro or other type fabric then inserting it into the decorator material (like a pillowcase) and make the closure velcro or something. that way if it needs washing it can be removed.

If I were to put the scented items in a Velcro pouch, I'd be afraid the pouch would come open with use and end up making a mess. I'd try sewing the scented pouch completely closed (I'd most likely just use a plain muslin for the pouch) and then inserting the scented pouch into a cover with a Velcro closure. That way the cover can be washed and if the pouch ever looses it's scent, one can always replace it with another and still have the pretty cover.
I must share with you that this little craft idea of yours has really inspired me. I usually gift a homemade food gift to extended family and friends each Christmas. However, this year I've decided to make little quilted lavender scented sachets instead ... thank you for your great ideas ... tb

A really neat gift for campers/hunters/or folks who just like to sit in front of an open fire... is the pine cone thing. Pine cones dipped lightly in wax, dried and given in a bag as an easy fire starter. Another easy fire starter is birch bark rolled and dipped in wax then packaged together. Some folks have been known to roll up cardboard tightly in tuna type cans and pour some wax over top let set for a quick stove effect for hiking/camping meals. These are cheap and really thoughtful if you know of anyone who fits the need! Joanna
