Sorry this response isn't posted under the original thread, but for some reason my computer isn't showing a reply option under this thread.
Anyhow, with regard to the KJV Bible and other translations. This is obviously a real mess among many churches today. Before jumping onto any band wagons regarding what's "right" and what's "wrong", I think it is wise for us to take a look at language from an historical perspective.
We often over look the fact that language is fluid and ever changing. The English speaking people of the 17th century would most likely have a difficult time understanding much of today's modern English language. In the same since, we find many folks today who have trouble understanding 17th century English.
Because language is fluid and ever changing, some English speaking theologians have decided to re-translate the Bible into more modern forms of English. To some this may sound like a good idea. However, we must carefully consider the methods by which the translation has been done. Did the translator translate from 17th century English OR did he translate from the original Greek and Hebrew texts?
The Geneva Bible and the KJV Bible were both translated from original Greek and Hebrew texts. By using original texts the true meaning and intent of God's word was kept accurate. If a modern English translation is translated from 17th century English, then it is all too easy to accidentally skew God's true meaning and intentions. I personally think if anyone decides to use a modern translation he needs to confirm that the specific translation comes from the original Greek and Hebrew. Otherwise, he is in grave danger of receiving an inaccurate work.
If your children's Awanas classes use the KJV and you and your husband use the KJV, then I would suggest sticking with that. I realize the children's department at your church may use a different translation, however, your children can still learn the memory verses at home from the KJV. Also, you can hold confidence that the KJV was translated correctly and you and your family have a very accurate Word of God.
I hope this helps you .... tb
