This morning has been a productive morning out in the chicken yard. I cleaned out the hen house & nesting boxes, racked the pen (good stuff for the garden) and gave all the feed/water equipment a good scrub. I then put fresh hay in the nesting boxes.
Our chickens are only 4 months old and when I went into the hen house this morning I had a hen sitting in a nesting box. I am so excited - we don't have any eggs yet, but I know it won't be long! As many of you know, fresh eggs are the best!
Our roosters have really plumped out during the past month. My husband and boys are planning to butcher them mid-December.
In the spring we plan to get another batch of chicks so we will have enough hens for the kids to start a little eggs business next summer. Of course, the egg business will be a part of their homeschooling curriculum.
