This morning the kids left for school and the dog got out and tried to follow them. when they got to the corner, she got hit by a pick up truck. It wasn't moving fast and it tried to stop but didn't quite make it and I think she got one of her rear legs caught under a tire and pulled it out. She ran off yelping and limping and ran around the back of the house. I went after her and found her sitting on the front porch by the door, no longer yelping. I told the kids to go on to school and I would take care of her she seemed O.K.. Thank goodness she was not bleeding profusely or they never would have believed me. She has several small abrasions on the outside of her upper leg which I am not at all concerned about. She is not putting any weight on the leg at all, in fact she keeps it up in the air and hops around on 3 legs. She has full range on motion on it, stretching bending raising and lowering it normally. There are no obvious fractures, although I think there might possibly be some bone damage to the paw. She does have a couple of 1 inch long tearing lacerations that are completely through the skin layers on the inside of the first joint. (I guess this would be equivalent to our ankle) I am sure this should be stitched, but do not have anything but plain cotton thread here to do it with. Nor am I positive she would allow me to stitch it. She is allowing me to handle the area and is not being even the least bit aggressive, but I'm not trying to use her for a pincushion right now either. Normally, I would just take her to the vet and be on the safe side, but this dog is just barely a year old and has had no shots and has no tags. We cannot afford to take care of the shots and tags, let alone pay a vet bill. I can try to tape it, like steri-strips or a butterfly bandage, but I don't have any appropriate tape here for that and my husband has the car at work. We live 20 miles from anyplace where I could buy the right kind of tape. A neighbor who's financial situation is about the same as ours came and looked at it, and she put some bag balm on it and we bandaged it. I'm a bit worried about putting something like that on such a deep wound, but it's already done so I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I gave her a couple of chewable aspirin and I have some antibiotics here I can use on her but I need to look up the dosage and make sure she can take the kinds I have here first.
Any suggestions on how to deal with this would be welcome.
