I've heard it's a sign that they are lacking a vitamin. I'm not sure which one though. Maybe someone else will be able to help you better!

Your dog might have allergies to something in his food. A high quality dog food can do wonders for a dog's coat. Most dog food is full of grains and dogs just can't digest grains like we do. If you buy a high quality dog food, you will also spare yourself the added expense of buying vitamin supplements since most high quality dog foods already have a variety of supplements in them. I personally would recommend Canidae ( canidae.com/ ). Canidae is actually cheaper than most of the other lesser quality brands because you feed less of it. This is because it is not full of grain fillers. It is more protein packed and calorie dense. You can use the store locater on the Canidae site to see if there is a store near you that sells it. If you can't find a store near you, you can order it online. I pay about $20 for a 20lb. bag. If you want to see my "baby", you can visit him at here: www.dogster.com/dogs/490117 . God bless you and yours. -Firefly P.S. I just realized that you are from England. You might want to check around for a pet food supplier online that is based in England. If nothing else, read the list of ingredients for Canidae and try to find a similar dog food available in England.

I have a boarder collie and she had the same problem and it turned out to be allergies. What she was allergic to however through me for a loop. She could have one flea and she goes blistic. I have seen it happen she got her treatment for fleas and two weeks we took her back to the vet and she was on medician to clear up all her bald spots and stuff. She was doing fine till the day we went to the vet and that morning she started scratching again. That day the vet found exactly what she was allergic too. They found one flea, yes I said one, and she went scratch happy (or should I say sad, mad) nuts.

My dog did something similar He has fleas. We had moved from a very warm climate so we had not dealt with fleas before.
