Does peppermint come back year after year? I found a large old fashioned wash bin last year and planted some peppermint in it, and yes it took over the whole thing. I never did anything with it, so the plants dried up last fall, and were snowed on all winter. Now its spring and I see that some of my chives are coming back, is this normal? Will my peppermint come back to, should I pull out the dried up plants, can I do anything with it, and will it grow back, or should I just leave it alone? Sorry, but last year was my first year of planting any herbs and I didn't know what to do with them. thank you for any information you may have.

Yes, your peppermint will come back. Probably in abundance. We planted 3 types of mint in our vegetable garden 3 years ago (BIG mistake) and for the last 2 years we have pulled it up as anoxious weed because IT took over!LOL! We do love our mint, but you were wise to contain it. Lots of herbs are like that. Chives are early crops just like onions and garlic. Every year we let them go to seed and we usually see the tops by mid-March or sooner(we live in SW MO). Mints will come up when it warms up some, usually about mid-April. Another word on mint: if you want it for medicinal purposes, harvest before it flowers( they will be lavendar in color). Dry in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks. Harvesting at this point makes it the most potent. Hope this helps.

Dear Sister Mistey, Oh does Peppermint come back year after year :-) My best tip for anyone growing mints..keep them contained, I have mine in a large pot or bucket buried in the ground...in the late fall, I harvest any loose seeds and tidy up the plants, cutting off the dead stems...this of course is after you get all the goodies :-)
Chives do come back as do so many herbs...but mint...it will take over the entire area if not controlled, a very wonderful herb but a bit invasive at times....
God bless you in your garden! Sister Penny

Peppermint can be invasive. So, I'm glad to hear you have it contained. We planted some by the house and it did take over that area.
BTW - have you gotten any of the specialty mint plants. I just purchases an apple and a chocolate mint. They do really smell like apple and chocolate. Wonderful!
