I have a book that teaches you how to quilt and am anxious to get started. Should I spend the money on good fabric or should I get some off of the dollar rack at wal-mart. Keep in mind this is my first attempt.

Sister Michelle, I am a quilter, not the best but I love it :-)
I would recommend to you this..only use 100% cotton fabric that you prewash and iron...I would start on a simple pattern, like a 9 patch or even Ohio Star, which I am making now..I just love that one...
Quilting is very easy, you just have to perfect your running stitch, and that is pretty much it.. Your fingers will get calloused and so will your thumb...I do use a thimble.
I just found some fairly nice VIP fabric on the $1.00 rack at Walmart...it is a very old fashioned type design.... once you get good at your quilting, then I would only use the better fabrics, not JoAnn's or Walmart's..they have a much lower thread count..some of your better quilt stores are the route to go...if you want the item to last long.
It's nice to have another quilter on board :-) Blessings, Sister Penny

It was so tempting to see what I sould do. I got out some scraps just to see. Boy that was not the best idea. I got a Split rail block, a jacobs ladder and a double nine patch done yesterday. This book teaches you a different block in each lesson. When you are odne you have 25 blocks. It is very fun and easier than I thought it sould be. I think I found a new craft that I like!!!!!

I have been quilting for many years. I have made 9 full size bed quilts by myself. I rotarty cut,and usually machine stitch, (sometimes I hand stitch), I hand quilt. It takes me a year to do one quilt, becuase I do all the work myself. I think that was very good advice for beginners. The simpler the pattern the better.pinkrosessks

I'd be interested in the title of the book you have Sister Michelle. it sounds like a great one. Or if any of our quilting experts can give me info. on a book or website for patterns for a beginner to try I would appreciate that as well. Thank you in advance.

Oooh I love quilting! I wish I had more time for it. If you are just starting, I wouldn't get the cheapest fabric out there as it is poorly made and won't be durable. You'd hate to put all that time into quilting and then have it start running or fraying after a year of use. I would go with at least a medium quality type fabric. The other thing I would tell a beginner is to start easy and use a rocking stitch and a thimble. Relax! If you aren't enjoying it, then you are putting too much importance on it. I am hand quilting a simple cross hatch design on a 9 patch quilt this winter, and looking forward to being all cozied up with it. I am also working on a crib quilt in a flying geese design, but I'll be quilting that on the machine with a continuous stitch pattern a friend showed me. Happy quilting!

KeeperOfTheHOme,
Will do.. the quilting has been on the back burner because of a huge sewing spree for my daughters and getting some Christmas things ready. My blog is updated frequently though with my little projects if you are interested. ~Lisa
