If anyone's interested, I have a list of the non-food recipes I use to save money at my blog. Things such as baby supplies, cosmetics (tooth powder, deodorant, etcetera) that I personally use, love, and save a lot of money by making, compared to buying even the generic brands of the equivalant items, that are chemical-laden. dancingamonginfiniteloveyahwehs.blogspot.com/2008/06/saving-money.html

My husband still buys toilet paper, but my daughter (5) and I are both no longer buying/using paper products anymore. I use a menstrual cup and made cloth sanitary napkins for backup, I sewed together a piece of old flannel shirt with an equally sized piece of old towel, sewed them together and made bathroom wipes (toliet paper alternative) which would also work well for those that cloth diaper their babies, we use cloth napkins for meals, cloth rags for cleaning and we were blessed to receive a large set of dishes, so that even when we have large gatherings, we no longer need to buy paper plates, cups, etc. I make all of my own cleaning supplies and cosmetics (hand/face cream, tooth powder, etc.) which saves us literally hundreds of dollars every year compared to buying the products from a store, plus everything I make is all natural, so I no longer need to be so concerned about what I'm using harming us. I also use herbal healing rather than jumping to the dr. everytime one of us is sick or hurt, with the exception of very obvious dangers, and in the last year, we have saved a LOT of money and stayed more healthy just by eating right and using herbal prevention. And, until this last month, I cook from scratch (with our situation, there's nowhere for me to cook - I seriously miss it!) almost entirely, with the exception that very rarely, we buy a pack of frozen burritos or a frozen pizza for times we know will be rushed. We homeschool rather than other options, and it genuinely saves us money. It's about $100 a year for us (actually, next year will be much cheaper, as we did not remember www.oldfashionededucation.com until after we ordered supplies), compared to what public or private school would cost us! We are now walking or biking everywhere, unless we need to go out of town. We are investing $200 to buy a new bike-tow to bring my daughter along (she's currently vacationing with grandparents), and it will double as a grocery transport each week, while my husband spends time with our daughter. Refusing to use gas has literally saved us at LEAST a hundred dollars a week. However, we are really blessed in that we live in a town that biking is feasible. Were we to live in the country, biking back and forth to the grocery store probably wouldn't be wise.

Oh, I am praying for you. I am still a baby in this field, but my heart goes out to you and I will be remembering you in my prayers the rest of this week. Could taking one or two weeks completely off work? Or would that throw off the year-round schooling too much... that's the only thing I can think of. God's blessings, and you are certainly remembered in prayer!

My family and I moved out of our duplex at the end of May. For two weeks we were staying at my in-laws to watch my brother in-law. We have been in a motel room for the last almost two weeks. My husband is a hard worker and is making quite a bit of money per week, but every penny is going to the motel, which has only a microwave, no stove or fridge. My husband has a friend that just moved out of his house, out of state. He has one roomate, and they had to beg their landlord to renew their lease again. The landlord liked them, but wants to fix the house. My husband has a bid on the house and is very friendly with the landlord. The remaining renter thinks this is ideal for him to get out of the rental and move out of town, and was positive when my husband mentioned talking with the landlord about us moving into the house and fixing it up for very affordably. Please keep this all in prayer. This would be a wonderful opportunity for our family and help us get back on our feet again, as I can do a lot of the repairs, as it would be "at home." Thank you so much ladies, and God's blessings to you.

Yeah! I was so beyond anxious waiting for them to come, and had a fun time opening them with Precious Jewel when they arrived! I flipped (she had not yet seen the fun in getting new books, as she had not been reading at the time)! Congratulations!

tb, I completely agree. I have seen everyone all over the internet worried about this. I do believe that we should be wise stewards and prepare for things in advance. I have heard about people stocking up things for 6 months - 1 years worth of non-perishables, not because they think it's wise, but because they are living out of fear (non-Christians and Christians alike) that they will starve if they don't. For me personally, this is a scary time. My husband is not working, we just decided to stop using food stamps, and I am committed to obeying the call to guard our family. We could stay on food stamps and start stocking up, but there's a deep sense that it's not what God wants - taking from others who are forced to give, even if we do "need" it. Satan loves to lay out things to distract us from the truth of matters and make us feel helpless and scared. I refuse to give him that. I'd rather focus on how the FLDS sect is being unjustly persecuted without evidence (don't agree with a lot of their religious philosophy, but want genuine evidence for what CPS is saying), the California goings-on about parents not being capable at any/every stage in their life to raise and teach their own children, etc. Satan just loves to put fear and uncertainty in our minds, tries to get it to sink into our hearts, and distracts us from the important issues of life - that God will take care of us, He wants us to focus on Him, and that we are to live out love and generosity to others.
